Best known as a bandleader, King Oliver was also Louis Armstrong’s teacher and was responsible James P. Johnson (1891–1955). Growing up listening to Scott Joplin’s rags, James P. Johnson was one of the originators Sidney Bechet (1897–1959). Being one of the original jazz artists, he helped create the style now known as jazz. As he used to play on the corner streets of New Orleans, other musicians would join him and audiences would gather to hear him play.
